Works in Progress

Like the bell, book, and candle of witchcraft, you see the strap, whip, and cane of kink. Maybe you see the rope. Objects hold weight in ritual, in activity, but we have a saying: the most erotic tool is your imagination; the most important part is between your ears.

When You Call My Names is a short story collection exploring the intersections of desire and identity. These stories examine the psychological dynamics of power exchange, the weight of ritual in relationships, and the tension between surrender and control. Their narratives map the ways people forge and test connection—how they name themselves, how they name each other, and how those names change over time.

Structured in three parts, the collection begins in the early months of the pandemic, when fantasy and isolation converge to shape new forms of intimacy. The stories move through limit-testing encounters—some deeply personal, others transactional, all transformative. As the world reopens, its characters attempt to redefine themselves, carrying the imprints of the connections that shaped them.

About

Zara Phillips is the literary pseudonym of a professional journalist/copywriter and lifestyle kinkster writing about desire, power, and the dynamics that shape intimacy. Her work explores the ways in which people create and test boundaries, how control shifts between partners, and how longing manifests in ritual.

Her upcoming short story collection, When You Call My Names, follows characters navigating the blurred boundaries between fantasy and reality. From a virtual D/s romance that becomes very real to a client approaching his first dominatrix to lovers playing with constructs of gender who discover they contain multitudes, these stories capture the electric environments where transformation occurs.

Zara is currently seeking a writer’s residency to further develop When You Call My Names. She will be attending AWP 2025 to engage with and be inspired by the literary community.
